UNITED THROUGH SPORTS

Young migrants hailing from Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia, together with volunteers from local NGOs MOVE and Spark 15, turned Marsa’s Holy Trinity parish church parvis and the adjacent streets into a playground. The 100-strong participants from different cultures and countries who participated in UNITE to fight prejudice and racism played street football, challenged each other in tug-of-war contests, and shared traditional games. Others danced to hip hop music with the help and directions of a number of volunteers from Street Elements.

MOVE uses street sports as a tool to bring about social change and cohesion while enabling young people overcome barriers that would otherwise hinder them from being physically active.

UNITE forms part of ‘SHAKE IT’, a cultural programme that MOVE is running as part of the European City of Culture programme under the patronage of the Valletta 2018 Foundation, and in collaboration with MCAST and the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, and GasanMamo Insurance.
